The Palestine Solidarity Association of Sweden (PGS) has received the news about the death of Dr. Haidar Abdel Shafi. We as members of PGS who knew him both in the political struggle as well as a personal friend send our deepest condolences to Dr. Haidar’s family.
We knew him for many years and admired his courage, integrity and profound knowledge.
We followed him as the head of the negotiation team in the Madrid Peace Conference and supported his severe criticism of the Oslo interim peace accords which failed to deal with the question of who are the rightful owners of the occupied land, therefore, leading to the settlement’s expansion in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.
Dr Haidar Abdel Shafi devoted his whole life to the Palestinian struggle and the Palestinian people’s right to self determination and statehood. His death is a great loss for the Palestinian people.
