STATEMENT BY THE PALESTINE SOLIDARITY ASSOCIATION IN SWEDEN

On May 5, the Israeli army invaded two clinics and training centers belonging to the Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees (UPMRC), situated in Nablus and Ramallah. The buildings were seriously damaged, furniture and computers were destroyed, and equipment was stolen. The Israeli army arrested Dr Mohammed Skafi, head of Emergency Services and First Aid in UPMRC; Nasaif Al Diuk, Coordinator of UPMRC Community Health Projects; and two UPMRC volunteers: Shadi Abu Bakr and Ahmed Badwan.

The Palestine Solidarity Association in Sweden is a NGO, non-affiliated with any political or religious organization. Since 1986, we have supported UPMRC in various development projects, with the support of SIDA, the official Swedish development agency. The on-going projects include support to child health, and core support to the UPMRC primary health care. We have thorough knowledge about the activities of UPMRC, including the emergency and first aid services and the community health projects. We know that these activities are peaceful and non-violent. They play an important role in protecting the health of the Palestinian people living in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

We have under a long period witnessed how the Israeli occupation seriously damage the health of the Palestinians. This occupation rapidly becomes more violent, brutal, and un-civilized. This recent attack on medical personnel is a further step along a barbarian road of occupation and colonisation. We urge the Israeli government and army to immediately release the prisoners, to return the stolen equipment, and to pay for the damage caused by the army raids. We also urge all humanitarian organisations, inside and outside Israel, to join in this protest.
