Vans Debuts OTW Old Skool 36 ‘Future Make’ Model at Milan Design Week 2025
Vans just unveiled its bold new Old Skool 36 FM silhouette with an immersive installation, dubbed “Checkered Future: Frequency Manifest” during Milan Design Week.
The sneaker is a part of the iconic brand’s experimental OTW line and its new project, Future Make, a platform “rooted in exploration and innovation.” This fresh take on the classic Old Skool is described as taking influence from the key elements of sound. Coming in tonal Marshmellow and Black colorways, it marks the first release in the Future Make series.
Design details include an engineered knit upper, a perforated tongue, and a 3D-injected Sidestripe. Meanwhile, Vans‘ signature waffle pattern outsoles have been reimagined with FM radio frequencies as the inspiration.

The launch of the futuristic OTW by Vans model was held at the renowned Triennale Milano art and design museum. Featuring musical performances by Björk, Vegyn, and Evissimax, the event spotlighted the brand’s origin story while also emphasizing their commitment to innovation.
The original Vans Old Skool debuted in 1977 under the name “Style 36.” The silhouette is famously emblazoned with a sidestripe detail initially referred to as the “jazz stripe” by co-founder Paul Van Doren. The Boston-born shoe company founder had come up with the design while doodling one day. Today, the distinct sidestripe makes Vans shoes instantly recognizable. The Old Skool has also become one of the most beloved skater silhouettes of all time.
