Spike Lee remained firmly on brand at the Met Gala Monday night, as he wore both Air Jordans and gear for his beloved New York Knicks.
The director and Knicks superfan wore the Air Jordan 3 “Black Cat” to match his black tuxedo and black collarless shirt. He was also clad in a Knicks hat along with an orange pair of Louis Vuitton sunglasses and blue and orange rope bracelets. His hardshell crossbody bag is from Rimowa.
Lee may be as famous for loving Air Jordans as much as he does the Knicks, and the pair of Js he wore for the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”-themed event released in January. The all-black sneakers feature a patent leather mudguard with additional glossiness to be found on the midsole. The shoe’s signature elephant print also carries over to the laces for an arrangement unique to this colorway.
Jordan Brand debuted this edition of the Air Jordan 3, named for Michael Jordan’s “Black Cat” nickname, in 2007. This year’s retro marked the first time it had ever been released. Originally retailing for $200, the shoe doesn’t have much higher resale prices on platforms such as StockX.
Later this year, the Air Jordan 4 “Black Cat” is expected to be released again after debuting in 2006 and returning in 2020.
Lee’s choice in footwear for the Met Gala deviating from the more expected range of black tie shoes worn by other attendees. But if anyone were to be expected to break convention with sneakers, it had to be Lee.
Jordan Brand has even made a model in Lee’s honor, the Jordan Spizike, which combines the four models worn by his Mars Blackmon character: the Air Jordan 3, Air Jordan 4, Air Jordan 5 and Air Jordan 6.
