Adidas and Yohji Yamamoto have collaborated once again on a running sneaker that is focused on blending the past with the future.
Following the success of their Y-3 Kyasu Sneaker in November, the longtime collaborators have unveiled another addition to their Gendo series, which plays with negative space and elevation. The Y-3 S-Gendo Run Sneaker blends Adidas’ archival trainer aesthetic with advanced technology found in the sportswear brand’s latest running sneakers like the Lightstrike midsole and Pebax plating.
The low-top sneakers are dressed in an all-black colorway with a breathable mesh upper that was accompanied by a suede panel sitting against the angled sole, which featured a gaping cutout at the center. Along with a Y-3 embossed leather tongue, the set is completed with a lace up closure and Yamamoto’s signature displayed in a diagonal fashion next to Adidas’ signature three stripes.
Adidas has been working with Yohji Yamamoto for decades. In October 2002, the Y-3 collection originally debuted at Paris Fashion Week with a collection that marked the designer’s entrance into the street and sportswear space. Throughout the years, they have reworked several of Adidas’ iconic silhouettes like the Stan Smith and Pure Boost. Also included in the Gendo series, the collaborators recently reimagined the Superstar sneaker into a $800 style. Similar to this silhouette, the silhouette’s typical sole silhouette was replaced this past October with Hidden Zip by hallowed-out polymer plates.
The Tokyo and Paris-based designer is often recognized for his avant-garde tailoring. His efforts in the fashion industry have allowed him to work with other labels like Supreme, Neighborhood and Dr. Martens, where they created a rendition of the 1490 boot with a hidden zipper.
The release date for the Adidas x Yohji Yamamoto Y-3 S-Gend Run Sneaker has not yet been announced but can be expected in the next couple months.
