“The acceptance of criticism is part of who I am,” said Ronda Rousey. “People either hate my guts or really, really like me. And I’m OK with that.”
This defiant attitude is reflected in the formerly undefeated UFC fighter’s latest ad for Reebok, #PerfectNever, which is part of the brand’s “Be More Human” campaign.
“There are a lot of unrealistic standards being put on everyone,” said Rousey. “I think it’s good to have examples out there who say, ‘You know what? Not everyone is always going to like you, but life will go on, you’ll be OK and you can still love yourself.’ ”
In the ad, Rousey stars out in a glamorous gown with a plunging neckline, her face perfectly done with makeup and flowing extensions in her hair. We see Rousey begin to wipe off her makeup and put up her hair, transforming into her fierce fighting persona.
The brand says that the overall message is to push people to grow, even if they experience failure along the way. Rousey certainly received a wave of both praise and criticism after her devastating loss to Holly Holm in November 2015, stripping away her undefeated status.
“Ronda breaks free from the restraints of being ‘perfect,’ ” said Yan Martin, vice president of brand marketing at Reebok. “She doesn’t let setbacks define who she is; instead, she sees them as opportunities to do better, to fight better, and to push herself toward greater rewards and achievements.”
