Timberland’s streak of noteworthy collaborations continues this month with the launch of a first-of-its-kind project for the outdoor footwear brand.
This time around, Timberland is partnering with Japanese footwear brand Hender Scheme for a hyper-premium execution of the VF Corporation-owned label’s 3-Eye Lug Boat Shoe. A fan-favorite model amongst Timberland enthusiasts, the 3-Eye Lug Boat Shoe was introduced in 1978 and is a rugged take on the more traditionally slim-soled boat shoe silhouette.
For this collaboration, Hender Scheme applied its signature raw, vegetable-tanned leather look to the Timberland 3-Eye Lug Boat Shoe. Rather than the dark leathers which typically make up the shoe’s construction, Hender Scheme’s version is presented in a light-colored natural leather that will darken and patina with use. Over time, no two pairs will be exactly the same, giving the shoe an added air of idiosyncrasy. An animated visual shared by Hender Scheme depicts how the shoe is intended to age with wear.
Founded by Ryo Kashiwazaki in 2010, Hender Scheme quickly became known for its high-end interpretations of classic footwear silhouettes. Perhaps most famously, the brand’s MIP-10 mimicked the design and shape of the Air Jordan 4. The brand has also produced shoes that look like Nike, New Balance and Reebok sneakers. In 2017, Hender Scheme released its first official collaboration with Adidas.
As for Timberland, this collaboration marks the first time it has officially teamed up with Hender Scheme. However, in 2016, Hender Scheme introduced its MIP-14 boot, which was highly reminiscent of the classic Timberland 6-Inch Premium Waterproof Boots.
Priced at 48,400 Japanese yen (which converts to roughly $326 as of publishing), the Hender Scheme x Timberland 3-Eye Lug Boat Shoe is set to be released exclusively in Japan. A raffle for the shoes is currently open via an online lottery and winners will be selected beginning March 18. The launch will conclude with an online release on March 21, however Hender Scheme is not offering overseas shipping.
