Designers were feeling sprightly for the spring ’15 season, with many turning an eye to new fringe interpretations in unexpected colors.

Whereas the traditional use of fringe is suede, on leather boots or moccasins, the stringy look has made a return on unconventional styles, from stiletto sandals to sneakers. Some styles kept the fringe in its natural straight-cut form, while others combined it with tassels or metallic pieces for extra impact.

Rochas’ pom-pom fringed slingbacks, one of the most eye-catching runway styles of the season, feature a fully covered fringed toe cap mixed with metallic beads and pieces of pink ribbon. Proenza Schouler went in a more minimal direction with its kiltie-front mule sandal with metal hardware.

The fringed look also appeared on more casual styles. Joshua Sanders used a metallic kiltie on a white low-top sneaker, while Isabel Marant and Aquazzura used fringe as panels on the front of sandals.

While classic fringe is nowhere near being on the outs, these new takes are best worn on special occasions for novelty effect.
