Nike Inc.-owned surf brand Hurley is getting a new man at the top. Bob Hurley, who founded the label in 1998, announced this week that he will retire and give up his title as CEO.
Stepping in to lead Hurley now is Nike veteran Bob Coombes, who most recently served as VP and GM of of the brand. Coombes will report to Jayme Martin, VP and GM of global categories at Nike.
“Working with Nike, we’ve been able to connect the world’s best surfers with the most innovative products to inspire riders everywhere,” said Hurley. “Now I look forward to focusing on what I love most — spending my time with the community and growing the sport with the athletes who push the limits of what’s possible.”
Interestingly, Hurley initially took on the CEO role on an interim basis in 2012, following the departure of chief executive Michael Egeck. It was an uncertain time for affiliates of Nike, as the athletic giant was in the midst of selling off the Cole Haan and Umbro brands.
Commenting on Hurley’s impact on the company, Nike President and CEO Mark Parker said in a statement, “Bob is a legend in the surf and action-sports industry who grew his passion into a globally recognized brand that stands for creativity, innovation and community. We look forward to continuing our work together to build the Hurley brand globally.”
