Why Journeys Exec Stacy Doren’s Favorite Quote About Supporting Women Comes from Madeline Albright: Women Who Rock

Doren believes the notion that women don’t do enough to support each other can be both a myth and a truth.

Stacy Doren, chief marketing officer of Journeys Group, believes the notion that women don’t do enough to support each other can be both a myth and a truth.

“I see supportive tribes of women everywhere and have been blessed to have some badass ladies by my side – lifting me up and cheering me on, through good times and bad,” the executive who joined the Genesco-owned shoe retailer in July, told FN. “[But] at work, I’d answer by saying it depends.

The executive added that while most women are incredible supportive of each other, she has also seen women not support each other. “I think the higher up you go you see fewer women in executive roles, and that creates a sense of competition, where some believe you need to fit into the ‘boys club’ to belong and validate your worth,” Doren continued. “And some women don’t want to share that earned seat at the table. It’s not ok, but it’s the truth.”

Doren noted that her favorite quote that relates to this idea is from the former U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright, who once said, “There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.”

As for how to empower the next generation of female leaders, Doren said the best thing the industry can do is model strong leadership qualities for younger talent to follow.

“Representation matters – seeing women confidently leading, making decisions, and taking charge helps younger generations visualize what is possible for them,” the CMO said. “I think it’s important for women to feel empowered to speak up and voice their opinion. I often witness females holding back and waiting for others to speak. I try to create a space where opinions are encouraged and valued.”

A version of this article appeared in the Feb. 3 print issue of FN, as part of the “Women Who Rock” special section. On Feb. 4, FN and Two Ten Footwear Foundation will honor these women at the annual live event in New York City.
