There’s a new “playa” in the flip-flop market.
Vancouver, British Columbia-based brand Malvados is launching its first sandal collection on Thursday, Dec. 1, just in time for resort season.
The debut collection includes 38 sandal styles in three categories: Lux, which features a soft EVA top sole and thin metallic straps; Icon, consisting of T-strap styles with braiding and hardware; and Playa, made up of one-piece EVA thongs.
The flip-flop label, whose name is Spanish for “wicked,” was founded by Baseer Khudayar and Jennifer Rainnie, a veteran of the action-sports industry.
It draws inspiration from music, travel and a free-spirited lifestyle — something Rainnie knows about firsthand. During her high school summers, for instance, she lived in a van and traveled Vancouver’s shorelines in search of surf and wind. And in her 20s, she moved to Hawaii and lived in a house full of surfers to charge the Northshore waves daily.
“Our mission is to offer comfortable footwear that is also stylish for the girl who loves to wander, seeks adventure and is always plugged into music,” Rainnie said in a statement. “Malvados is footwear that you will take with you everywhere.”
Starting Thursday, the label will be available online at Malvados.com, as well as at Flip Flop Shops, Bikini.com, Ritz Carlton, Spash Hawaii and other retailers. The line is priced from $21 to $31.
