One day after fans of the “Alien” movie franchise celebrated Alien Day, things are taking a negative turn.
On Tuesday, Reebok released the Alien Stomper sneakers worn by Sigourney Weaver’s character Ellen Ripley in the 1986 movie “Aliens.” The sneakers were released at noon EDT on Reebok.com and sold for $175, but Reebok experienced a surge of traffic to its website that caused many customers to experience major delays in purchasing a pair. Reebok took to Twitter, asking fans to bear with them as the company handled the issue. Still, many were left empty-handed when the shoes sold out in less than an hour.
On top of those issues, Reebok, as well as Twentieth Century Fox (the movie studio behind the “Alien” franchise), are facing backlash from fans who complained that the shoes were only offered in men’s sizes — despite the fact that a woman wore them in the movie.
Absurdly small qty sold aside, SHAME ON the sexism of @20thcenturyfox @Reebok for only releasing Ripley’s shoe in MEN’S SIZES. #AlienStomper

Really @Reebok? The shoes worn by a heroine only to be released in mens sizes. Outrageous. #AlienStomper @ReebokUK pic.twitter.com/aA5ZGvfj4u

Dan Mazei, head of Reebok’s global newsroom, told USA Today that the shoes were produced in sizes 3.5-12, which is a typical range for unisex sizing, although sizing varied by market.
most expensive pair listed for $4,000.
Reebok is also offering customers a chance to bid on a pair of the sneakers, with proceeds benefitting Soles4Souls, a nonprofit that distributes shoes and clothes to communities in need around the world.
