How Two Of The Buzziest Shoe Labels Stacked Up For NYFW

As a part of Chloe Gosselin and Newbark‘s Maryam and Marjan Malakpour’s ongoing tasks for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, the two shoe labels were charged with mounting their first full-scale fashion presentations on models.

They each approached the idea of dressing cleverly, albeit quite differently. Let’s see how they stacked up.

Chloe Gosselin

Gosselin, who lives part of the year in Las Vegas with her partner, the illusionist David Copperfield, channeled Sin City’s razzle-dazzle showgirls by staging a lineup of models behind a velvet curtained wall, revealing only their crisscrossed legs and swiveling feet perched on mirrored cubes to great effect.

They wore the collection’s new geometric sandals, such as the Wisteria style, plus leather flora appliquéd and fringed pumps.  Gosselin was inspired by the ’60s and ’70s work of Ossie Clark and Cecilia Birtwell, who we’re known for combining disparate elements in their work. That said, the collection was a consistent step in the right direction for the designer, who is known for her overt femininity and pure lines.

Newbark

The Malakpours are all about California rock ‘n’ roll with a Persian bent. They re-created that heady world to showcase spring. With their muse and brand face Michelle Ouellet plus a couple other cool girl types lounging in their leathery lair, the sisters put the spotlight on their other talent besides shoes: styling (they handle the wardrobes of Keith Richards and Cher, after all). The shoes were a natural extension of this mise-én scène: signature babouche flats, slides and loafers updated in carpet textiles, metallics, dusty suedes and raw denim that struck just the right chord.
